Het Klederdrachtmuseum: a canal house full of traditional costumes

Logo of Klederdrachtmuseum Amsterdam

The Klederdrachtmuseum is located in the heart of Amsterdam. Admire costumes from Marken, Staphorst and Zeeland and listen to stories from the wearers about the function of the clothes. Also nice: take a picture in traditional costume!

Klederdracht has slowly disappeared from the streetscape, but in the Klederdrachtmuseum in Amsterdam most of the costumes come together, each in its own themed room. Each room represents a region and is painted in the regional colours. Discover what the different colours meant and what clothing was worn when. In Staphorst, for example, blue-black was worn during the mourning period, but in Spakenburg the mourning was purple.

The collection in the museum gives a good impression of the most important regional costumes, like ordinary people used to wear them and in some villages still wear them today. During a visit you will be immersed in Dutch folklore and you will learn a lot about the Dutch cultural history.

Wondering how the traditional costume looks like? From mid-August, put on your own Volendam costume, dive into the photo studio and take your picture! Fun for the whole family or as an outing with friends.
